Barlborough Links Golf Centre, Chesterfield

This golf course was developed over an ex-opencast coal mining site, a technically demanding job involving work with heavy soils, rock and soil-making material.  The greens were constructed in 1994 using graded and officially tested USGA-type recycled materials, understood to be the first time this was done in the country.

The client, C P Holdings, is one of the largest privately-owned companies in the UK, specialising in site reclamation and real estate development.  The site was sectored for golf, residential and commercial, and is now almost complete. The course was opened in 1996 following the design, construction management and an 18-month period of maintenance management by Hemstock Associates.

A further 9-hole layout was started in 2000, with 6 of the holes now formed.  The complex remains a successful focal point for the daily-fee golfer in the region, being easily accessible off the main M1 motorway junction, a couple of minutes away
